Stanley Durwood’s family owned several single-screen theatres in Kansas City, Missouri. After serving in the United States Army, he returned home and decided to take over his family’s business.
He created the first multiple theatre in the world by renovating single-screen theatres and transforming these into smaller establishments with several auditoriums.
Durwood’s new multiplex theatre became successful. This led to the formation of American Multi-Cinema, Inc., otherwise known as AMC in 1968. Due to AMC’s massive success with Moviegoers, it began to broaden its market and established more theatres nationwide.
As of this date, AMC is internationally recognized as the largest movie exhibition company. AMC operates in 7 European countries and is the top cinema chain in Ireland, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Furthermore, AMC is considered as one of the most productive theatre chains in 22 of the largest metropolitan areas in the United States of America, which includes New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
